What is PICSI Treatment?

Physiological intracytoplasmic sperm injection (PICSI) is a technique used to select sperm to use in Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment. It involves placing sperm with hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural compound found in the body.

Following the PICSI, the injected eggs are incubated overnight and assessed the following morning for evidence of fertilisation. The average fertilisation rate following PICSI is similar to ICSI and IVF, with 60-70% of injected eggs fertilising normally following PICSI.

When Its Done?

  • Prior studies have suggested an advantage of PICSI in patients with male factor for both clinical pregnancy and fertilization rate. We assessed whether selecting mature hyaluronan (HA)-bound sperm for ICSI (PICSI) improves the IVF outcome of patients with male factor infertility.

  • PICSI is highly recommended in these particular cases: Previous failure or low fertilisation even after ICSI, Low embryo quality or their failure to develop (not related to poor egg quality), Repeated miscarriages.
